In the summer of 2018 Eleanor Snare and I developed and tested research methods designed to observe and understand the clothing dynamics of specific geographic places. These hybrid ‘Residencies’ methods draw on art and design, cultural geography and ethnography to gather the ‘lie of the land’ of fashion behaviours associated with sustainability and resilience. This work is inspired by Kate Fletcher’s Fashion Ecologies project. We piloted these methods in London and Leeds in the summer of 2018 and our paper describing the methods was presented at What’s Going On?, the Global Fashion Conference, 2018. The full paper, titled: ‘Residencies: mixed methods design research investigating fashion through place’ will be published later this year.
